Manja Neerattu

Manjal Neerattu/Manja Neerattu(Turmeric Bathing Ceremony) is temple ceremony that happens in every month on the ‘Pounrami’ day (Full Moon). This is a function which has roots in Tamil culture.

During the ceremony, water is boiled to its maximum temperature and turmeric powder is added on it. After adding turmeric powder an Arecanut tree/Betelnut tree flower-bunch(Pookula) is dipped into the boiling water and beaten strongly in the body.

In Dharmapuri Chamundeshwari Temple it goes one step further, after the Manja Neerattu The Arecanut flower-bunch is dipped into boiling Payasam(rice pudding) and beaten strongly in the body.
